Book Review

Book Review - changed date!

Dear students,

Your task is to pick a novel of your own choice and read it during the spring term. You need to keep the novel available in school since I will ask you to read it during classes sometimes, for instance when your friends take the speaking part of the national test.

You will be asked to hand in a book review towards the end of the term. Your book reviews will be published in a folder in the school library marked “SamBe10c Reading Suggestions”. Your book reviews will be used as an inspirational guide for the students of Sjödalsgymnasiet.

In your review, I want you to include the following;

-          The title of the book

-          The author’s name and a few short facts about him/her (maximum three sentences – this is not the focus of the review).

-          A short summary of the plot.

-          What you think the theme is (anger/jealousy/growing up/love…) and how it is presented in the book.

-          Summarize what you thought of the book, what you liked and disliked.

-          Your idea of the intended reader. To whom would you recommend this book? Why?

Your book reviews should be e-mailed to Pernilla on the 21^th of May.

COMMERCIAL ASSIGNMENTS

In this project, we are improving our English by studying the world of advertising. We are reading about the psychology behind marketing. We are also trying some of the “tools” that the advertising agencies use when they create their ads, posters or commercial films.

Assessment 1

GROUP WORK
Poster and campaign idea

You will work in small advertising agencies where your job is to create a poster with a clear slogan and a campaign idea for a given product. In week 17, you will be asked to “pitch” your ideas – that is, try to sell your ideas to your class in an oral presentation where you use powerpoint.

When you explain your ideas to the class, I want you to present the following;

·         Which product did you get?

·         Present your target group. Age? Gender? Income? Is this a product they need or a luxury product?

·         How is your poster related to the target group?

·         What kind of campaign do you have in mind for this particular product? Where will you place your posters? In what magazines will you advertise? In what media? Any other strategies that you have in mind to seduce the target group?

Maximum time of speaking; 6 minutes. Everybody should participate.

Summarizing essay

Here, you will summarize what you know about advertising in general as well as the ideas behind your group’s work. What ideas and/or techniques are there behind the commercials and ads that we see daily? Also, explain in your own words your commercial poster and your campaign idea, and the ideas behind it.

In your essay, you should include at least 5 of the words on your word list. Also, hand in the word list together with the essays.

We will work on this short essay in class during week 17. Pernilla will give you feedback on your written language.

How to create a good outline

Introduction – short, explain general idea of essay, CATCH YOUR READER with direct action, examples, being personal, maybe ask a question

Body – try to structure into three different areas. Keep your reader interested! Linking words between paragraphs such as However, But, Besides, Also, In addition

Engelsklektion SmBe10c: The strangest Monday ever

This is today's class assignment. After writing the story, we took 10 minutes to circle/underline all verbs and check them, using our own grammar books.

The strangest Monday ever

Your job is to create a story about the strangest Monday ever. Write in the past tense and include the following ingredients. (Please note that all of them have to be included , although some of them can play minor parts.)
